For four weeks, the expedition participants had been traveling along the route "Khanty-Mansiysk - Kyoktokai" along the Irtysh river artery, thus overcoming more than 5,000 km one way.
During the scientific journey the researchers studied cultural, natural and industrial objects, locations of three countries - Russia, Kazakhstan and China, through the territory of which the Irtysh River flows. Thus, the expedition participants visited the key industrial cities, industrial and historical and cultural sites of these countries, held environmental actions.
YuSU students were once again convinced how beautiful the Irtysh is in different parts of the world, tried on national clothes and had a unique experience. "We completely plunged into both the industry, the culture of the locals, and the natural conditions. I even tried the role of a miner in an abandoned mine tunnel, it was not easy to get through there, but I got unforgettable emotions! We also tried on national Kazakh costumes and tasted national food! So versatile was our research," says Yulia Ermakova.
"During the expedition, we were going to museums, visiting sacred places in Kazakhstan and advanced industrial enterprises, as well as the UNESCO global national geopark in Kyoktokai," Anastasia Khairova shares her memories. The girls remembered very much their acquaintance with the local people of China. "We were very welcome and literally at every step they would come up to take pictures and communicate," the students note.
Environmental science students were also surprised by the fact how nature and industry can perfectly harmonize. "I was convinced of this when I visited such a powerful enterprise as SIBUR in Tobolsk. In addition, we also visited the enterprises "Kazchrome", "Kazzinc" in Kazakhstan", - Yulia notes.
The main advantage of the expedition was the collection of the necessary material for writing research papers and the final thesis. During the expedition students were engaged in careful observation, recorded all useful materials from excursions, took photos.
"The materials will be required for us to write our final qualification thesis. It will include the collected data on the industrialization of the Priirtyshye within the borders of the three states. We visited important industrial sites such as "SIBUR", "Kazzinc", "Kazchrome", a mine in the UNESCO global geopark Kyoktokai and many others. From these locations we collected information on the history, main products, use of the Irtysh River, ESG-warrant and any other information that will allow us to assess the impact of these areas on the Irtysh River. It should be noted that the exposition based on the results of the expedition will be opened in the Museum of Geology, Oil and Gas at the end of 2024, and in 2025 - in the cities of the Irtysh region. In addition to joint exhibitions, the final product of the international project will be the publication of a popular science book "Irtysh Industrial", the creation of an interactive multimedia map of the Irtysh, a popular science movie, and an international educational online resource.
