Yugra State University hosted the Summer School for Early Career Researchers “CLIMAT-LAB” organized by the Scientific and Educational Center “Environmental Dynamics and Global Climate Change” with the support of Tyumen State University.
Despite the fact that the school program was aimed at 4th year Bachelor's and Master's students of 1-2 years, it has attracted great interest among specialists involved in climate research. During the week, the participants underwent training consisting of five modules.
As part of the courses, the trainees studied environmental climatology and climate monitoring, learned about climate models and assessed the gas-regulating function of terrestrial ecosystems. Landscape and hydrological analysis and GIS climate study were also conducted.
Welcoming the participants of the Summer School, Roman Kichanov, Vice-Rector of Yugra State University, noted that the university staff has a wealth of experience and competencies that they are ready to share with young researchers. According to the Vice-Rector, the knowledge and skills acquired will be useful in solving important governmental tasks at the regional, federal and international levels.
The lecture on environmental climatology and climate monitoring was given by Nadezhda Voropai, Ph.D., of the Institute for Monitoring of Climatic and Environmental Systems, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, YuSU. The participants learned about the theoretical foundations of climatology, discussed important climatic factors and learned about modern equipment for measuring temperature, air humidity, precipitation and other indicators.
In the practical part of the lesson, the students studied the device of the station, which monitors microclimatic data, and prepared a detailed instruction for its collection. This will allow future researchers to use the station more efficiently and obtain more accurate data for their scientific work.
At the scientific and practical conference “Youth Arctic: Science for the Future”, participants discussed the main directions of development of northern and Arctic territories, partnerships, problems and their solutions, as well as the development of youth initiatives and project. Participants visited the International Art Residence of Folk Art and Design. A visit to the Mukhrino carbon polygon gave special impressions to the trainees.
“Climate Lab is not just a summer school, but a platform for interaction and exchange of ideas between young researchers and experienced scientists. It is a motivation for further research. Practical sessions on climate models allowed to see how they help to predict climate change. Lectures on GIS technologies revealed the possibilities of spatial data analysis and climate change modeling. Discussions on natural-climate solutions became a platform for exchanging ideas and finding new ways to solve current problems. I decided to participate again, as last year was incredibly inspiring and gave me valuable knowledge and unforgettable impressions", - said Anastasia Koval, a second-year master's student at YuSU High School of Ecology.
At the end of the Summer School, the participants thanked the organizers for the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of climate research and expand their knowledge and skills in this field. They also look forward to further cooperation with Yugra State University and its research and education center.
